Kames Fish Farm Visit
During March we had the opportunity to visit one of our long standing suppliers and see the brilliant job they do for ourselves.
Kames is Scotland's only family run, independent fish farm, and is the sole producer of sea reared steelhead trout in the UK. We already knew about the exceptional taste and quality of their trout, and we were excited to learn more about how the fish is produced and the science behind it.
Our day started with an early trip from Perth to Kilmelford near Oban where were had a warm welcome from Cate Cannon and Lucy Liston who gave us lots of information about the history of Kames and the work that goes into making a brilliant product that is sustainable and without damage to the natural environment.
Next we had a tour of the hatchery where we could see the development of the fish before they were big enough to go out to sea. Then we took the short drive to Craignish where we boarded a boat out to see the pens firsthand. We were struck by the beauty of this part of Scotland and how peaceful it was. The pens were huge, much bigger than we were expecting. We saw how the fish were fed and were able to observe a welfare check. All of the team had such passion for their jobs and you could easily see the love they had for the fish and for the area they call home.
Kames trout had a delicate, naturally sweet taste with a firm texture. It is leaner than salmon and bigger and more athletic than river rainbows. If you haven't tried it yet, we recommend you do.
